THE BRAHMA FOWL
by Lewis Wright

1st ed 1870,
2nd 1871,
3rd 1873.
This 2011 reproduction of the 3rd edition including plates from both 2nd and 3rd ed's.

I received a commission to produce this work and so I have re typeset the work and made it available as a print on demand edition.

Lewis Wright published this work before his major work, The Illustrated Book Of Poultry with its famous colour lithographs.
I have included in the work reproductions of the plates from the second and third editions of the Brahma. It is interesting to see the change in the plates, the second edition being much more raw compared with the refined pictures in the 3rd edition, proporting to be the same bird.

The original work is rare and difficult to find, so it is a logical work to reproduce.
I have never seen a copy of the first edition, and this edition uses the text of the 3rd edition.

In the typesetting process, I did several drafts which I subsequently made slight typographical and layout alterations. I have bound them in standard cases, green buckram. I dont like to discard the drafts, I think its wasteful,so I make available these excellent plain paper reading copies, with all colour plates of the final edition.

The controversy over the Brahma and its origins was raging in the USA as well as England with competing claims about the origin this remarkable breed. It sounds very modern to me.
In the USA, Geo Burnham proported to know the origin of the breed and gave some to the Queen Victoria in England as gift.

(Geo Burnam
The History Of Hen fever 1855,
The New Pultry Book 1871,
The 1874 China Fowl.and numerous press articles)
Lewis Wright responded in the press, then with this discussion, and information from sources showing different origins.

HAND BOUND SPECIAL EDITION
A.J.Compton was a pivotal force in the development of the Australian poultry industry in the period of the late 1890's. This book is his major work, 423 printed pages of text, 60 full page black and white illustrations, 1 colour frontispiece.
Compton discusses the management techniques used, highlighting the ease of available food today, the breeder management techniques of the era, the breeders of the day, with their comments, and the standards for each of the breeds of the day. It is interesting to hear comments like, "Well he was a terrible artist, I have better birds than that" and to realize that he was an artist who could draw what he saw, not distort to the ideal, but draw the reality. A must for any student of Australian History.

Malays, Bantams, and Gameforwl in Australia
by A.J.Compton 1898
2011 Large Print Edition
HAND BOUND SPECIAL EDITION

I received a commission from the Compton Family for a reproduction of the Australasian Book of Poultry and suddested it should be a special leather bound edition. In my thinking of the production I thought I should include a reproduction of Compton's other work, The Malays. However this work is in a small octavo size and can't be bound together, so I rescanned this book and retype set in modern fonts, but in the larger format so it could be included with the larger work.
That made the final large volume as the "Complete Works" of Compton, but of course that does not include his numerous newspaper articles. As the work will likely travel around the family, I decided a slip case was required as well.
In the meantime I produced a few copies of the text just in case others might be interested in a plain cased copy, and of course a copy for myself in Ostrich skin and cloth.
As always I can produce in a variety of hand bound styles.

HAND BOUND RESTORED EDITION

Diseases and Enemies of Poultry
by Pearson and Warren
Restored Original edition
This work is an early reference work of 1897
It is important as a reference work for the early research into the diseases of poultry and has an excellent reference still on parasites of poultry.Loenard Pearson authored this section of 116 pages. The second section of over 100 chromolithographs and total 743 pages is a delightful study in the American Wildlife which were regarded as the enemies of poultry. The pictures are themselves now collectible as artwork.
The plates sell for 5-15.00 each making the collection worth a large amount just for the pictures. However I have undertaked to restore the work as a whole to avoid the loss of the information. The only departure from the original style was to make the boards thicker so that the rear board could have a pocket inserted to hold the chart of Tape Worms, rather than the poorly selected original location in the center of the book. The chart is fragile and some folds damaged, but attempting to open the chart in the book resulted in more cracking of the folds.

Hand Bound in Half Calf,
Boards lined with hand marbled papers on exterior infill.
All edges in original gilt, matching marbled end papers,
in keeping with the original design
$250.00
Sold, listed only for reference
