Biosecurity, the new buzz word. However, in the poultry industry, the health of our stock has always been important, even if sometimes , lapses in attention have resulted in some problems. So why all this fuss about Biosecurity and why should we be concerned.? Biosecurity is just the concept that when dealing with life (bio) we need to have an approproiate care for ourselves and others (security). So how does that play out? What do we do? Most biosecurity is simply an applied common sense. There are no great secrets,it is a matter of being thoughtful about what we do and when we do it. Firstly, biosecurity requires some basic knowledge of the life ( bio) we are dealing with. So some knowledge of the organisms and disease we might encounter, how they grow and spread, and the symptoms of the appearance is important. Secondly, an understanding of the basic ways to prevent the spread of these organisms, and incorporating these practices into our usual ways of keeping our poultry. Lastly, we need to have some plans in place if our system fails to protect us, or if an outside problem increases so as to become a threat to our livestock or ourselves. My apologies for the incompleteness of this article, I hope to expand the above outline, unfortunately the pressure running up to Christmas meant somethings would not get finished, and this is one of them.
