WORLD'S POULTRY CONGRESS
2008 |
Dear Friends, The last few weeks have been very interesting, with politics being very much on everyone’s minds. Having spent time in many overseas countries, many with political systems far away from ours, I am delighted to see the results of our elections, epitomised by the pictures of the old and the new prime ministers and their wives, sharing a meal at the Lodge. No blood in the streets, but a dose of statesmanship and grace at the conclusion of a vigorous campaign. I am often tempted to think that politics and lawmaking is the way to make society better, though I guess some of the laws I would like may not be popular with many Australians. But thinking on the scene of the Lodge, I realise that the only way to improve our society is to be able to debate vigorously, but within a framework of genuine concern for the people we meet each day. I see that Jesus did that, with each person he met. He was very stern, indeed angry with injustice, but always saw the person, and treated them with respect. Even people who were tax collectors, prostitutes, lepers and political zealots were treated as people who deserved respect. I guess it’s easy to forget that, and I do often. Christmas is the time when we reflect on Jesus, and his way of living, and on his example. My best wishes to you and yours,
Jim Finger. |
